Brilliant Club Undergraduates are Ready to Fly!
Thornhill Academy has recently launched the second academic year of the Brilliant Club Scholar’s Programme for some of their Most Able pupils in Year 7. This exciting, opportunity of a lifetime involves our pupils working collaboratively over the next few months with their PhD mentor from Northumbria University on a STEM related project; Near Infrared Spectroscopy. Their mentor, Mr Ravindu Ranaweera is a PhD research student whose specialism is in Aerospace Systems Engineering.
Pupils got off to a great start with their project with a visit to Durham University on Wednesday 3rd April. The day involved an introduction to their mentor, an introduction to research skills and methods and their first tutorial.
Time was also spent on a very inspiring campus tour, where pupils were shown common rooms, lecture theatres, student accommodation and the college library where we experienced looking at 300 year old books!
Everyone had a fantastic day! Pupils are now ready to focus on the next stage of the programme commencing with their in-school tutorials
