Wyvern Academy hosted a government roadshow about changes to what children learn in school and how they are assessed

The academy was one of just nine schools across England to be selected to host the event

Teachers and education specialists from across the North East gathered at Wyvern Academy in Darlington,  on Tuesday 26th of November to discuss changes to what children in England learn in school and how they are assessed.

Wyvern Academy was one of just nine schools selected to host the Curriculum and Assessment Review’s roadshow about the future of the school curriculum and the examinations process.

The event was a great success, with over 200 teachers and education specialists from across the North East coming to the school to discuss issues such as inclusion and social justice, how to ensure an excellent foundation in English and maths, curriculum content, assessment and 16-19 education.

The education experts who gathered at Wyvern heard from the Chair of the Review, Professor Becky Francis CBE and had the chance to share their thoughts on how to improve outcomes for all pupils.

Professor Francis and the rest of the panel also met with students from Wyvern and had a tour of the school.

The Curriculum and Assessment Review, on behalf of the Department for Education, is looking at the barriers that hold children back in life and wants to make sure that what they learn in school, and how they are assessed, meets their needs and is fit for purpose.

The purpose of the roadshows is to make sure the experts get a wide range of thoughts and opinions from each region in England.

Peter Seed, Headteacher at Wyvern Academy, said: “We were honoured to be selected to host this roadshow at Wyvern and it was a great pleasure to welcome the government’s review team to our school.

“Our students were very proud to have the chance to meet Professor Francis and her team and to talk to them about all that they value here at Wyvern.”

Michael McCarthy, CEO of Consilium Academies, said: “The event was a huge success with over 200 education professionals in attendance and many excellent ideas being put forward.

“At Consilium Academies, we are committed to enriching the lives of our pupils through an ambitious, student-centred approach to education, and this roadshow was a fantastic opportunity for us to help direct and shape our students’ future schooling and assessment.”
